Day 4-Monday,May 14th- Part 1-Daytrip to Sunset Crater National Park~

On Monday we worked from our 'homebase' in Flagstaff...it was great to only have to spend 3 hours round trip to visit the Grand Canyon's South Rim...Sunset Crater was only about 30 minutes from the hotel. We visited here mid morning, returned to the hotel for lunch and then headed to the Grand Canyon...it truly was an unforgettable day.  We were blessed with amazing weather and had some elk sightings with full racks  up close! We could not believe how tame these elk were.  The Grand Canyon was breathtaking...these pictures just do not do it justice.  It is so immense, your brain just can not comprehend.  The Colorado River far below looks like a stream...it is 300 feet across...the North Rim is 10 miles away...it looks so much closer.  The canyon itself is over 5,000 feet deep- I was overwhelmed by the beauty we were taking in...He is an amazing Creator!

In front of Sunset Crater...this volcano erupted over 1,000 years ago and has been inactive since then~

Taking a hike around the lava field...those huge boulders are all lava...the gray looking sand is actually ash remnants!

The Gang hiking up the Lava Trail

Our Junior Rangers being sworn in:) Now back for lunch and then off to the Grand Canyon!!
